Students in the North Hunterdon Theater Organization will perform Anne of Green Gables on October 30 and November 1. Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book, the play captures the charm and excitement of that enduring classic. The play is dramatized by Joseph Robinette and produced by special arrangement with Dramatist Publishing Company, Inc. Show times are: Thursday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 1 at 3:00 and at 7:00 p.m. Doors open for ticket sales thirty minutes before curtain. Tickets, at $8 for general admission and $6 for senior citizens and students, are available at the door.
Anne of Green Gables tells the story of young Anne Shirley (played by senior Heather Birmingham), who is adopted by farm woman Marilla Cuthbert (senior Gabriella Siefert) and her brother Matthew (played by junior Fred Darcy) on Prince Edward Island in the early 20th century. An amusing heroine, Anne fills the Cuthbert’s lives with affection as well as chaos, as she journeys through her teen years amidst many painful yet humorous mistakes, with her bosom friend, Diana Barry (junior Gianna Porfano), at her side and adversary Gilbert Blythe (sophomore Avery Stoker) not far behind. A busy-body neighbor, Mrs. Rachel Lynde (junior Julianne Grillo), is ever ready to note Anne’s shortcomings, but is won over by her spirit and charm.
NHTO hopes that the production will encourage people to read the classic Anne of Green Gables. To that end, NHTO is offering $1 off the ticket price of audience members who show that they are reading L.M. Montgomery’s novel by bringing their copy to the performance.
The North Hunterdon Thespian Honor Society is participating in the International Thespian Society’s TOTS EAT food drive. Audience members are invited to bring nonperishable food items to the show. The Thespians will bring the collected food to a local food pantry.
The show is directed by English teacher Mary Meo, and stage managed by English teacher Lauren Young. Music teacher Katie Meo is the NHTO theater coordinator.
