Congratulations to the North Hunterdon High School Chess Team for becoming the 2020 New Jersey High School Chess Champions. North Hunterdon’s team consisted of, in board order: Jonathan Chin, Angelica Chin, Alex Kmosko, Sumanta Das, Ryan Shen, and Nicholas Kmosko. The varsity team was made up of the top 5 rated players from North Hunterdon, who collectively won a total of 16.5 points out of 25. This is North Hunterdon’s first High School Team Championship title. The team also won two individual trophies, with Jonathan Chin taking 2nd place and Angelica Chin taking 4th place.
The 2020 New Jersey High School Chess Championship was held at Union County Vocational-Technical School in Scotch Plains, with 5 rounds being held over March 7-8, 2020. The team tournament consisted of two sections: Varsity and Junior Varsity. Varsity teams are comprised of five players, while JV teams have four.
The North Hunterdon Chess Club was founded in 2016 by the captain of the chess team, Angelica Chin. Every year, a group of competitive chess players from the club represent North Hunterdon at state and national tournaments in New Jersey. In 2017, they won the Junior Varsity section of the 2017 NJ High School Team Championships. In 2018, the freshman team of Jonathan Chin, Sumanta Das, and Prerna Shankar won another state championship, the 2018 NJ 9th Grade Team Championship.
