Next week is Social Emotional Learning Week and North Hunterdon has planned a daily activity that students can sign-up to attend during lunch or directed study.
Studies show that Social Emotional Learning (SEL) delivers long-term improvements in skills, behavior, and academic performance while reducing and managing barriers to learning and growth. SEL competencies also can enhance long-term success after high school. From March 6 – March 9, North Hunterdon will focus on a new social emotional theme to demonstrate how we can build capacity in our awareness of self, others, as well as the tools available to help us along the way.
Below is the list of activities that were sent to students with links to sign-up:
Monday, March 6 Mindful Monday – Yoga! Introductory Yoga will take place in the media center conference room (lower level). Enrollment is capped at 20 people per period, first come, first served.

Tuesday, March 7 Chalk the Talk! The words we use to talk to each other and ourselves matter! Research shows that positive self-talk can improve self-esteem, stress management, and well-being, motivate you to overcome obstacles, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Positive self-talk can help strengthen our cognitive performance as well as our functional connectivity to work and in everyday relationships and interactions. In this activity, students and staff will write positive, constructive messages on sidewalks outside the school to serve as reminders of that important idea.
Activity will take place outside in the courtyard, but meet first at the Reading/Writing Lab. Enrollment capped at 25 students per period, first come, first served. Link to Nutritious Words from The Nurtured Heart Approach

Wednesday, March 8 Wonderful World of Color! Coloring is a healthy way to relieve stress. It calms the brain and helps your body relax. This can improve sleep and fatigue while decreasing body aches, heart rate, and respiration. Although coloring isn’t the ultimate cure for stress and anxiety, sitting down for a long coloring session holds great value. The wonderful world of color. Sign up to help color the lion poster in Media Center to help promote mindfulness and kinesthetic learning and social interaction.
Activity will take place in the media center conference room. Enrollment capped at 25 students per period, first come, first served. Read more here about how coloring reduces stress and what it teaches you about the learning process.
