As we begin the 2013-2014 school year, we would like to share some of the updates that the Technology Department prepared for this new school year:
In terms of Infrastructure:
- We upgraded our Internet connections to 200Mbps for the benefit of students and staff.
- We upgraded our Internet router to support the 200Mbps throughput to the Internet for the benefit of students and staff.
- We upgraded our Core Switches to provide wire-speed switching across networks for the benefit of students and staff.
- We upgraded our Wireless network. We now have 140 access points between NHHS and VHS, effectively doubling our capacity.
- As usual, we have updated (or will be updating in the beginning of the school year) some computer labs. This year the turn was for the Math lab at VHS (consist of mobile carts).
In terms of Web 2.0 and other User Services:
- We continue to offer email to all students via Google Apps for Education. See the resources page for more information.
- We will be moving staff email from Exchange to Google Apps for Education effectively increasing individual email storage space from 300MB to 30,000MB in each mailbox. Unlike exchange that has an associated cost for licensing, Google Apps for Education is provided for free by Google.
- We consolidated the Professional Development and Teacher Evaluation software systems into one solution.
- We will be piloting an online testing solution in preparation for PARCC.
- We will be evaluating our current Student Information System as well as looking at other alternatives.
- We are running a 1:1 pilot program with all students in 9th grade. All students in 9th grade will receive a Chromebook computer for their academic use. Additional detail will be available soon.[/private]
