On Saturday, November 13, 2021, 30 members of the Unified Club at Voorhees High School participated in the Special Olympics Thanks4Giving Dash and Splash in Asbury Park by running a 5k and/or jumping into the freezing ocean! The Thanks4Giving Dash and Splash was back in person this year after a 1 year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of the Unified Club at Voorhees High School were tasked with fundraising for the Special Olympics as well as their own Unified Program at Voorhees High School.
Unified club members used social media and word of mouth to begin fundraising. During the last week of fundraising, principal Ron Peterson and assistant principal Kelly Anne Kieffer upped the stakes by challenging the student body to raise an additional $1,000. If the additional funds were raised, the principals would plunge wearing a unicorn floatie and turkey hat! During lunches, Unified Club members encouraged students and staff to donate to the plunge. Their efforts allowed our team to raise twice our total in only two days! Voorhees Unified fundraised a total of $8,591 with top fundraiser in the state, Jacob Sawyer, totaling $1,592! Voorhees Unified was proud to participate in another plunge and embody the message that they truly were, freezing for a reason – What reason? Building and growing the Unified Generation.
