At the end of each school year,
the Voorhees Science Department gives out Scholarships and Awards to hard
working, dedicated science students. These are awarded to the students at
the Senior Awards Banquet.

C. Buro Scholarship
Nicholas
Buro was the Science Department Chairman at Voorhees High School for many
years and changed the science program here in a very positive way.
He implemented the “Physics First” program, making the required
science sequence physics, chemistry and then biology. This
program, developed and strengthened by a technology grant written by Mr.
Buro, has tripled AP science enrollment from three classes to nine classes
in five years, and the passing scores remain in the 80% – 100% range.
This has allowed our department size to almost double, and the science
program to become the largest in the school. He also encouraged his
department members to participate in science competitions, and he set the
finest example, his students regularly achieving excellence at technical
competitions, State Science Day, Conqueror of the Hill and many others.
Nicholas
Buro passed away in February of 2000, so the science department set up a
scholarship in his name. The Nick Buro Scholarship will be awarded
to a senior who has exceptional work ethic, service and integrity and has
shown academic growth while at Voorhees. The amount of the
scholarship is $500.
