North Hunterdon answered with a combined five runs between the second and third innings to defeat Watchung Hills, 5-2, in the NJSIAA/Blue Ribbon Awards North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 championship. It’s North Hunterdon’s first sectional championship since 2008. North Hunterdon advances to the Group 4 semifinals where it will face Morris Knolls on Tuesday at Yantacaw Park Field, Nutley at 4 p.m.
Mason Spichiger struck out two straight batters to end the inning. The senior eventually retired 17 straight batters, including eight strikeouts. North Hunterdon cut the 2-0 deficit in half in the second inning when Kayla Parker crushed a solo home run over the left field fence to lead off the inning. The Lions added four runs in the third inning, as Isabella Many, the only player on either team with multiple hits, led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt and a fly out, Spichiger hit an RBI double to tie the game. Following a walk to Parker, senior Julia Arthur then hit a three-run home run to give North Hunterdon a 5-2 advantage.
