Marc Monks put down a suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 17th inning to score Austin Arndt and lift North Hunterdon to a 2-1 victory over Hillsborough in a marathon Skyland Conference-Delaware Division contest in Annandale. The win tied the Lions for the Skyland Conference Divisional Tie with Hunterdon Central who lost.
Both teams stood scoreless until the top of the 14th inning, when an RBI single by Brian Cole scored Ryan Roberts to give Hillsborough a 1-0 lead. But North Hunterdon tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on a two-out RBI double by Andrew Meiners to score Shayne Fontana.
In the bottom of the 17th, Arndt walked to lead off the inning. He then moved to second on an groundout by Tim Heard and to third on an error before scoring on Monks’ squeeze. Arndt got the victory for North Hunterdon, tossing the final 3 2/3 innings in relief. Fontana started and threw the first eight innings before giving way to Griffin Hatton, who three 5 1/3 innings. Meiners finished the day 3-for-6.
Brian Schmidt took the loss for Hillsborough, throwing the final 2 1/3 innings. Dylan Finer started and went nine, followed by Alex Bronfield, who threw the next five. Matt Hornich and Andrew Zitel each had two hits on the day for Hillsborough.
