Today, in our continued effort to celebrate Black History month, we remember Thurgood Marshall.
Thurgood Marshall was born in 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland and attended racially segregated schools. He served as the lawyer for the NAACP from 1932 to 1961 and traveled the country taking all manner of cases that involved racial issues. He got the nickname “Mr. Civil Rights” and argued 32 cases in front of the Supreme Court and won 29 of them including Brown vs. Board of Education.
Through his litigation, Marshall helped to destroy Jim Crow and its discriminatory laws. He became the first African-American Supreme Court Justice when President Lyndon Johnson appointed Marshall in 1967. He served on the court until 1991.
Marshall argued more cases in front of the Supreme Court than anyone else ever has.
